2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley
Saggio Hills vineyard is located just north of Healdsburg in the Alexander Valley. The hillside faces west, allowing the vineyard full sun exposure. The hot afternoon sun helps to soften the tannins, drive off vegetal characters and develop ripe fruit flavors. This wine is rich and velvety on the palate, brimming with ripe berry fruit with hints of tobacco and vanilla oak. The hillside soil is gravel and clay which imparts a rich “dusty” component. As winemaker for Kendall-Jackson and Clos du Bois wineries, I would seek out hillside grapes like the Saggio Hills vineyard for my reserve blends. Even though we grow estate Cabernet in Dry Creek Valley, I sometimes can’t resist exploring other regions with unique characteristics like this vineyard. Harvest only happens once a year and as a winemaker it is a very exciting time. When amazing vineyards have grapes available it is difficult to turn them away. With six years of bottle age, this Cab is tasting wonderful now, but it will continue to soften and develop over the next four to six years. If you are grilling up a juicy piece of meat tonight, you don’t have to wait because it is tasting great now!
