2006 Estate Merlot, Hawley Vineyard

2006 Estate Merlot, Hawley Vineyard

I have always been a huge fan of Merlot. As winemaker for Clos du Bois we were, at one point, the largest Merlot producer in the country. I was even given the moniker “Mr. Merlot.” I still believe it is one of the great wines of the world and believe more than ever that it has to be grown in the right place. Our estate vineyard and winery is located on Bradford Mountain, overlooking the Dry Creek Valley. We grow three different clones of Merlot on our hillside organic vineyard. The different clones express slightly different characters and allow us to produce a more complex wine. - John Hawley

Tasting Notes

Aromas of black cherries, plums and earthy tobacco virtually jump out of the glass. In the mouth, the flavors blossom revealing warm spices, oak vanilla and complex fruit flavors that carry into the long finish. Aging for 24 months in French oak barrels (50% new) and 12 years in the bottle has softened the tannin structure and rendered this Merlot smooth and luxurious.

2020 Tasting:

Color: Deep garnet. Full bodied. Aromas of strawberry, and lovely floral notes of rose and violet. Flavors of boysenberry and dark chocolate.
