2008 Viognier, Sierra Foothills

Fire in the hole! This fantastic Viognier is exploding with grapefruit and passion fruit. Tropical aromas leap from the glass and the pineapple and apricot will seduce you till the bottle is empty. 75% of the grapes came from Damiano Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills, and 25% came from our vineyards in Sonoma County. The Viognier grape is native to France’s Rhone Valley and thrives in warmer climates, like Placer County in the foothills.
We press the grapes, without crushing or de-stemming them first, to minimize tannin and other harsh components that can be extracted during pressing. The juice goes immediately into neutral (4 to 8 year old) French Oak barrels for fermentation. We are not looking to impart oaky flavors, but the barrel fermentation process creates a velvety mouth-feel and smooth finish. 50% of this wine went through malolactic (secondary) fermentation which adds a buttery component, but keeps it crisp and fresh!
