2008 Zinfandel, Ponzo Vineyard
2008 was a challenging year for Zinfandel, but a good one. Having been bottled for only four months, our 08 Ponzo Vineyard Zinfandel has already won its first gold medal (Grand Harvest Awards). This vintage proved difficult for several reasons: First, many people struggled with smoke taint problems resulting from the forest fires we had burning up in Mendocino County all summer. We were lucky the coastal winds kept the thick smoke away. Second, hot weather in August and September caused the sugar content in the grapes to soar. This gave us, along with many other wineries, problems with stuck fermentations. We are lucky to have a very experienced winemaker who has dealt with these issues before and was able to craft a beautiful wine, with the help of his two sons, despite all the difficulties. This wine has wonderful aromas of rich ripe berries; I think of raspberry or blackberry jam. This wine is also accompanied by well-integrated vanilla oak character. The mouth feel is smooth and luscious with rich berries that coat your tongue and finishes with a little back pepper and hints of licorice. Most importantly, this wine is well balance and can be enjoyed either by its self or with food (BBQ is my recommendation). This wine will be best if drank within the next five years.
