2009 Chardonnay, Hoot Owl Creek Vineyard

In 2009 we decided to leave the river behind and head to Alexander Valley for Chardonnay. We came across a vineyard my Dad had sourced when working for Kendall-Jackson. Hoot Owl Creek Vineyard is planted with Robert Young clone and had always been a highlight for him while working at K-J. We barrel fermented the wine in approximately 25% new French oak. The oak treatment was slightly less than we have used in previous vintages in order to preserve that intense fruit character. Secondary malolactic fermentation has softened the acidity and added some interesting complexity with flavors and aromas of popcorn kernel, vanilla and Crème Brulee. With six months of bottle aging, this wine is tasting wonderful, with fruity citrus aromas of orange-peel and lemon. This fruit is accompanied by rich, creamy vanilla and roasted nuts. The mouth-feel is rich and velvety, leaving you wondering where all the wine in your bottle just went. This Chardonnay is tasting great at this moment and will continue to develop in the bottle over the next year. I recommend pairing this Chardonnay with fresh crab or lobster.
