2009 Pinot Noir, Oehlman Vineyard
The Oehlman family has been farming their land on Vine Hill Road, nestled between famous Pinot vineyards for five generations. The bald eagles are back to nest in a grove of eucalyptus trees next to the vineyard, and we had the opportunity to watch the fledgling eagles take their first flights over the vines. The vineyard is planted with Martini clone Pinot Noir, which is one of the original clones planted in Russian River Valley. The 2009 vintage produced outstanding wines, potentially rivaling those from 2007. Abundant spring rains and a relatively temperate growing season produced excellent fruit quality. The mild weather allowed for a slow maturation, which led to great flavors, intense aromas, and good acidity, especially with Pinot Noir. A warm September ensured that our Pinot Noir was picked before the October rains. This wine shows bold aromatics of cherry and strawberry with rich earth tones and molasses. Flavors of strawberry jam and cherry follow through onto the palate with hints of spice and vanilla on the finish.
