2009 Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Creek Valley
Our first release of Sauvignon Blanc is also the Hawley brothers first release as winemakers. Last harvest, Austin and I wanted to make a Sauvignon Blanc; however, our Dad refused to take on another variety and told us we were welcome to undertake the project as long as we left him out of it. With all of the winemaking decisions up to us, we first had to decide what style we wanted to make. I worked at a winery in New Zealand in 2004 and my brother spent a few months traveling with me, so we both had developed a fondness for the New Zealand style. We decided to ferment in stainless steel at low temperatures and were immediately excited by the bright fruity aromas of grapefruit and melon. We have been helping our dad make wine for five years, but making this wine was one of the best learning experiences because it forced us to trust the knowledge we have acquired and use resources other than our dad to fill in the gaps of our winemaking abilities. We are excited that our first attempt as winemakers turned out so well and even more exited to enjoy it as the weather warms up and wines like this Sauvignon Blanc taste all the better.
