2009 Zinfandel, Ponzo Vineyard
Ponzo Vineyard is located along the Russian River at the convergence of Dry Creek. Our Zinfandel grapes come from two different blocks of the estate. The first is a bench-land block of head-trained vines planted from cuttings taken from the original 100-year-old vines on the property. This block always ripens first, and the grapes are small, dark and intense. The second block is closer to the river and planted from the Ridge Geyserville clone. This block has big berries and a juicy strawberry jam character. We ferment the two different wines separately and then blend them when it goes to barrel. The 2009 vintage is a great example of how these two different blocks complement each other. Blackberry jam and spicy raspberry aromas leap from the glass. On the palate, the wine is surprisingly smooth and delicate with ripe berry flavors. It finishes soft and smooth with a hint of spicy vanilla oak. This wine just won it’s fourth gold medal and we wanted to make sure our club members had a chance to taste it before it’s gone.
