2011 Estate Meritage, Hawley Vineyard
The term Meritage (taken from “merit” and “heritage”) was created in 1988 to represent Bordeaux-style wine blends. To legally call your wine a Meritage you must belong to the Meritage association, which stipulates that the wine must be a blend of only Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petite Verdot, Merlot and Carmenere), it must be your best blend, and under 25,000 cases. The 2011 vintage of our Estate Meritage is a blend of 36% merlot, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Cabernet Franc. All the grapes for this wine were grown on our ranch, certified organic by CCOF and farmed without chemicals. The small yields and thick skins from our vineyard produce very concentrated wines in both color and flavor. The Estate Meritage is a multi-layered and complex blend, showcasing Bordeaux varietals from the Hawley Vineyard. A delicate perfume of dried flowers on the nose is a prelude to a dense core of cassis and dark cherry on the palate. Maturation for over two years in French Oak barrels seamlessly integrate these flavors with rich tannins for a silky mouthfeel.
