2013 Zinfandel, Ponzo Vineyard
The Ponzo family has been farming their ranch just South of Healdsburg on the Russian River since 1929. The vineyard lies on the border of the Dry Creek and Russian River Valley appellations. The grapes for this vintage came from one of the oldest blocks on the Ponzo ranch. The gnarled head-trained vines were originally planted in 1912 and continue to be dry-farmed. John Hawley decided to start producing Zinfandel from Ponzo vineyard in 2005, that wine made him a Zin fan, and it went on to win five Gold Medals. The Russian River valley has a diurnal climate that is cool and foggy in the morning and hot in the daytime. Its sandy soil is packed with nutrients to foster our fruit-forward Zinfandel. This vintage has notes of raspberry, blackberry and cherry with hints of clove and spicy oak.
