2014 Pinot Noir, Oehlman Vineyard
Gold Medal - SF Chronicle
The Oehlman family has been farming their land on Vine Hill Road in the heart of Russian River Valley for five generations. Typically, we ferment the crushed grapes in small one-ton, open top fermenters. The small tanks allow us to closely control the fermentation temperature. We press out each lot as it reaches dryness in a small basket press to ensure gentle pressing and avoid extracting tannin. The pressed wine goes into 50% new French oak barrels for 18 months.
This Burgundian wine is drinking very well now. It is a classic Russian River Valley Martini-clone Pinot Noir, shining beautifully with notes of Bing cherry and a touch of vanilla on the palate. Layers of spice and perfume are balanced with bright acidity, which make an elegant wine. This wine is extremely versatile and pairs with a broad range of dishes, from pork tenderloin to grilled salmon.
