2014 Reserve Grenache, Russian River Valley
Grenache is a favorite of Paul Hawley’s and 2014 was the second year vintage he has worked with the grape. He decided to ferment a portion of the fruit ‘whole cluster’, which is without crushing and de-stemming. Whole cluster creates a carbonic fermentation where the juice ferments inside the berry producing fruity, and floral esters. The stems impart a spicy cinnamon note to the wine. Pressing was done in a basket press to minimize tannin extraction and the wine was aged in French oak barrels for 9 months. Although Paul makes the wines with his father and brother, he is proud to call this wine his baby. He set out to make the style wine that he enjoys drinking: lighter bodied, moderate alcohol, balanced acidity with lots of ripe fruit and spice. Our Grenache is brimming with raspberry and strawberry fruit, highlighted by white pepper and nutmeg spice. It is light bodied and smooth with juicy cherry flavors and a long, rich finish. Drink now or over the next few years to enjoy the vibrant fruit.
