2017 Chardonnay, Hopkins River Ranch
Double Gold Medal - SF Chronicle Wine Competition
Our single-vineyard Chardonnay is sourced from fruit off of the Hopkins River Ranch Vineyard. Owners, Bob and Toni Hopkins, tend their vineyard using sustainable and organic practices. The vines couldn't be situated in a better place; they grow happily along the river itself in the Russian River Valley AVA, off of Eastside Road.
There are two different Chardonnay clones represented in this bottle: Clone 809 and Clone 4. Clone 809 is a popular French clone lending muscat characteristics to the fruit: floral notes and flavors of stone-fruit and tangerine. Clone 4 is a classic French clone lending more traditional Chardonnay flavors like green apple and citrus.
We put our Chardonnay through secondary fermentation in the barrel. We barrel age with the lees (yeast), aka "sur lee aging," which allows us to control the acidity in the wine even further. Doing this develops a full mouthfeel with hints of toasted vanilla and caramel, without ending up with an overly buttery flavor profile. We are very proud of this elegant, Double Gold Medal-winning release!
