Hawley Estate Zinfandel Vertical
This library vertical features the FIRST three vintages of our own Hawley Estate Zinfandel signed by John, Austin or Paul Hawley!
2011 was the first vintage of Zinfandel from the Hawley estate since 1979 when John Hawley made a few cases of “garage wine” from the dilapidated old vineyard originally on the property just after graduating from UC Davis. The old vineyard is long gone and this block of Zinfandel was planted in 2007 from cuttings off an old local zinfandel clone known as “Rockpile Clone” or “Cloverdale Church Clone”. The vineyard is certified organic and grown without the use of chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides. This block is a ‘field blend’ planted to 92 percent Zinfandel and 8 percent Petite Sirah that is picked together and co-fermented in small open-top fermenters. We ‘punch down’ the fermenting grapes by hand every few hours to maximize extraction of flavor and color. When dry, the wine is pressed out using a small basket press into 75% French and 25% Americana oak barrels and aged for 12 months. These vintages of Estate Zinfandel have a rich ruby color with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, cola and nutmeg. On the palate, this wine is smooth and balanced with flavors of juicy cherry and wild strawberry with a rich vanilla finish.
This wine has the acidity and structure to age well- that being said, we encourage you to open and enjoy the 2011 now. Enjoy and compare the difference in bottle-aging among these three vintages. Each year has helped to render the wines velvety and delicious!
