Ponzo Zinfandel Vertical
This library vertical features the 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages of our wine club favorite Ponzo Zinfandel signed by John, Austin or Paul Hawley! (Three bottle wooden box sold separately)
The Ponzo family has been farming their ranch just South of Healdsburg, on the Russian River, since 1929. The vineyard lines the border of Dry Creek and Russian River Valley appellations. The grapes for this wine came from two separate blocks on the Ponzo ranch. The first is head-trained vines planted from cuttings off of the original 100-year-old vineyard on the property. The second is from a block closer to the Russian River planted with cuttings of the Ridge Geyserville clone.
The 2012 season began with heavy spring rains, fueling vigorous vine growth. The summer was warm and consistent, with no extreme heat spells. The ideal ripening conditions allowed us to pick at ideal maturity with exceptional flavor development. The 2013 vintage came from a small block of the Ponzo vineyard that is growing over 100 year old vines. The 2013 and 2014 Zins grew in drought years, resulting in lower yield crops with smaller berries, allowing very complex flavors and aromas.
Our Zinfandel vintages from the Ponzo Vineyard typically show bright aromas of raspberry with notes of spice and pepper. They are rich and well balanced with ripe flavors of red plum and wild strawberries. The wine finishes remarkably long with spicy vanilla and brambly flavors lingering. These wines typically drink best within the first 3-7 years. Enjoy this vertical now!
